As part of our commitment to safety and security preparedness, we will be conducting an intruder/evacuation drill on Tuesday, September 27, 2022. Students will be instructed on how to respond in the event that an intruder would enter our building. Our first priority is for the safety of our students. This drill has been planned in consultation with Edgar and Douglas County Police departments. This letter is to inform you of the drill in the event anyone questions why the police and volunteer fire departments are present at school. There is no reason to be alarmed. In the event of a true emergency, we would use all of the communication tools at our disposal to alert you as to how you can pick up your child. Our hope is that we will never have to use these skills; however, it is important for us to practice and walk through them so we are prepared for any circumstance. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us by calling the office at (217)531-1850. Thank you for your support.

Say “hello” to our next new staff member: Ms. Hendrix! She teaches Family and Consumer Science and is the FCCLA Adviser. “I graduated from Oakland in 2017. I then attended school at Lakeland for two years before transferring to EIU. I graduated from EIU in 2021 with my bachelor’s in Family and Consumer Science Education and minors in psychology and financial literacy. This will be my first year teaching as well as a first time FCCLA Adviser. I have a 7-year-old son, Asher, who is in 1st grade. I also have a two-year-old shepherd husky mix named Sophie. I am engaged, so in my free time I have been wedding planning with my fiancé Cody, a graduate form Shiloh! I am excited to see where this first year of teaching takes me and am looking forward to getting more involved in the community with FCCLA!”

Check out today’s PIP (Partnership in Parenting) group connection activity : The Douglas County Health Department came Wednesday morning for a handwashing presentation. The children passed around toys with "germs" on them, then saw what their hands looked like under the black light after sharing the toys. They then washed their hands to see how well they cleaned away the germs. One picture shows how quickly the germs spread from their hands, to their faces, and even the faces of their parents!  Each child made a "Dirty Hand/Clean Hand" craft using their handprints. Families took home handwashing resources and supplies from the health department. They also received two books from PIP -- "Wash, Wash, Wash" book by Rookie Toddler and "Sherm the Germ" by Dr John Hutton.

We can't wait to introduce you to our next "new" staff member and parent education with PIP: Katrina Maxedon! "My name is Katrina Maxedon, or Ms. Katrina around Shiloh! I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated from Roosevelt University with a Bachelors in Forensic Psychology and Child Welfare Employee License and have since gotten my Early Childhood Education Credential and Family Specialist Credential. I was a Foster Care Caseworker and worked within the foster care system in differing roles for a number of years. I moved to Newman with my now husband in 2021 to settle down near family and begin farming and raising goats. Both of my grandparents, Steve and Dee Allen, dedicated their teaching and counseling careers to Shiloh and its students, and now my mom. Mrs. Mixson, is also at Shiloh! I am now a Parent Educator with Shiloh’s Partnership in Parenting prenatal – 3 program after teaching PreK at Shiloh last school year. I’m excited to be working in a community that I love, working with families and learning about how we can support all the children in our district right from the start. PIP is taking new families who are pregnant or have children 0-3! We offer home visits with parent-child activities, play groups, developmental screenings, resources, and more! Contact any of the home visitors or Lynn Holm for more information."

Time in nature is good for the soul. Junior high students spent their science classes Friday journaling in the schoolyard. We then looked in the prairie for milkweed plants and monarch evidence.

Next up is one of our newest staff members: PE/classroom aide Troy Maxwell! “My name is Troy Maxwell. I'm one of those people that had a late realization. I didn't realize until I was in training to be a correctional officer that I want to teach. My goal is to teach techniques and other skills I've acquired over the years to our youth, in a fun and disciplined fashion. I attended this school, and the teachers I had were and still are my heroes. I hope to be as good them!”

Our next staff introduction is our new PE/Health teacher Donna Dean! "My name is Donna Dean, and I'm the new PE teacher 6-12. I am a mom to 4 kids: two seniors and two 3rd graders. They keep me really busy! I love attending and coaching their sports when I can. I am passionate about health, wellness, and fitness. I became a PE teacher because my high school weightlifting coach inspired me to love weight training and exercise. I hope I can do the same for the students at Shiloh as fitness has had a great impact on my life. Being physically active is not only good for our bodies but also for our minds. I have enjoyed meeting all of the students and they have welcomed me right in. I look forward to a great year here at Shiloh! "
