Fall fun with Mrs. Climaco's 2nd grade! "This week our field trip had to be rescheduled because of the rain, but we made Jack o'lantern sun catchers and learned about all the ways people use pumpkins - our favorites were Jack o'lantern carving contests and giant pumpkin boat races! (Google those pumpkin boat races if you have time - so funny!) I also fundraised to get enough money for each student to pick a book from our scholastic book order each month to keep. They were so excited! Here’s a picture of them with their first month’s book picks!"

To families of students with disabilities: Tuscola School District is hosting an outreach event for Prairieland Service Coordination on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at East Prairie Middle School Lecture Hall. This event is open to the public and will provide caregivers, parents, and teachers an opportunity to learn about PUNs, and what services can be accessed from the Illinois Department of Human Services for students with developmental disabilities. Parents and caregivers will have the opportunity to ask questions about transitioning their students from school to services outside of the school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Suzanne Rominger (217-253-2377 or romingers@cusd301.org).

On October 11 the 6th-12th graders listened to a message from professional athlete Tom Gilles of Sports World. Sports World encourages positive choices, and Tom inspired with his experience and his message of each person being able to choose their "dream, team, and attitude." “You’re Not Born a Winner, You’re Not Born a Loser – You’re Born a Chooser!”™

Please welcome our next new staff member, Mr. Smothers! “Hello, I am Terry Smothers. I am teaching Algebra, Geometry and a wonderful 6th Grade Social Studies class here at Shiloh.  I am also a proud Shiloh alumnus, attending K-12 here and graduating in 1989. Some of my best memories were during my time here, especially playing basketball and baseball.  I am also looking forward to being the JH Boys Basketball coach this year and look forward to a great season.   My previous work has been primarily working as a Chemist in organizations like Marathon, Pfizer, and the Department of Defense, so this has been a big change for me.  Teaching is definitely more challenging!  I have truly enjoyed my first few weeks back at Shiloh, and the kids are amazing.  I look forward to helping them learn and seeing them grow, just as I did when I was their age.  I am very excited to be here in the classroom sharing my knowledge with the students.”

A reminder about extracurricular expectations: Thank you for supporting our students and staff by attending extracurricular events! As a reminder the following rules apply to all students attending extracurricular events/activities: • No running or playing in the hallways, multi-purpose room/cafeteria. • No drinks outside of the multi-purpose room/cafeteria. • Students are to be in the gym while the extracurricular event/activity is going on. • Students are not to exit the gym unless it is halftime or intermission. • No entering the locker rooms unless you are a team member. • Students in grades PreK-5 (or younger children) must be accompanied and in the presence of a parent/guardian at all times. Unfortunately, students who are not following the rules will be asked to leave and may be suspended from future attendance at extracurricular events/activities for the remainder of the season. Additionally, we are struggling with the safety and cleanliness of our gym floor. Only students who are playing in the contest at an event, wearing proper attire, and supervised by a coach are permitted to shoot baskets at half time and in between games. As a community, it is our opportunity to support our students, athletes, officials, and coaches. Do not individually address any players, coaches, or officials during a contest with coaching/playing tips, insults, profanity, or personal judgements. The most difficult part of our responsibility is dealing with fans who cannot follow these rules, and the vast majority of the time, the player is more embarrassed than encouraged. Please do not put administration or students/athletes in this uncomfortable position and instead exercise self-control. If you have a concern with any of these expectations, please contact a school administrator. Please remember, there is a time and a place for all conversations to be had. Immediately after or during a contest is not the time or place to voice displeasures or concerns to a coach. By working together, we can provide a positive and supportive environment for all our students, athletes, officials, and coaches.

It's time for our next "new" staff introduction. Please give a warm "welcome back" to Mrs. Krabel! "Hello, my name is Penny Krabel and I am the new school librarian at Shiloh.  I am returning to Shiloh after leaving for one year to teach PreK in the Oakland and Kansas Districts.  Before that I was a Home Visitor for 3 three years as part of Shiloh's Partnership in Parenting (PIP) program.  I was also previously employed at Child Care Resource and Referral at Eastern Illinois University as the Literacy Specialist, so school librarian is getting to combine all my favorites into one position. I have been married to my husband Doug for 23 years, and we have 4 daughters, 3 sons-in-law, and 5 grandchildren. I am excited to return to Shiloh and continue with the great library program that Shiloh is known for."
